Vito "Tuddy" Vario was an Italian-American mobster and a member of the Colombo crime family. He was born on November 27, 1925, in Brooklyn, New York. Vario became involved in organized crime at a young age and quickly rose within the ranks of the Colombo family.
He was a close associate of Jimmy Burke, who was the inspiration for the character Jimmy Conway in Martin Scorsese's film Goodfellas. Vario was known as a tough enforcer and was involved in a number of illegal activities, including loan sharking, extortion, and racketeering.
Vario was eventually indicted in the infamous Lufthansa heist case, in which $5 million in cash and jewelry was stolen from a cargo area at John F. Kennedy International Airport in 1978. Though he was suspected of having involvement in the heist, he was not convicted for it.
Vario died from natural causes on May 23, 2014, at the age of 88.
